General Information for Auditions and Theory 2023: Teachers will be administering theory tests to their own students. Teachers can find out more information regarding the theory test and auditions by going to Competitions — Tennessee Music Teachers Association (tnmta.org) Please look under the resources label at the bottom of the page and click on the Musicianship Manual for theory information and click on Auditions and Competitions Syllabus for information regarding auditions.

Theory 2023: Students grade 3 and higher, must complete the theory test in order to participate in the auditions. The cost is $40 for grades 3 and higher, which includes the payment for the audition and theory test. Students in grades K-2 are NOT required to take the theory test. The cost for grades K-2 is $30. Theory test only is $10. Please make your check out to KMTA. All checks are non-refundable.

Auditions 2023: There will be in person auditions this year on April 22nd and 23rd, located at UT School of Music, Natalie L. Haslam Music Center, 1741 Volunteer Blvd. Knoxville TN 37996-2600.   Each teacher who enters students is asked to work at the performance auditions, at least two half-day shifts, determined by the number of students.  If you cannot work, you must provide someone to work in your stead.
  At the end of each auditions day, teachers can pick up their students’ rating sheets.  Those not picked up by the end of Sunday will be available at Lane Music until May 15, when they will be discarded.

Rules for the instrumental (non piano) auditions may be found in the Auditions Syllabus and will be followed strictly.
Student in grades K-6 must perform a minimum of two pieces from two different stylistic periods and one must be memorized. Students in grades 7-12 and adults must perform a minimum of three pieces representing three different stylistic periods and one must be memorized. All students MUST have an accompanist. Maximum performances times are as follows: K-6, 10 minutes; 7-9, 15 minutes, 10-12, 20 minutes and adults, 30 minutes.

Rules for piano can also be found in the Audition Syllabus. Piano students must choose a minimum of 3 pieces from 3 different stylistic time periods and all pieces must be memorized. Maximum performances times are as follows: K-6, 10 minutes; 7-9, 15 minutes, 10-12, 20 minutes and adults, 30 minutes.
